Business English... Or Boring English?
In 80% of the world's English communication, trade and financial dealing, you’ll find the English language being used. People learn Business English for various reasons and it means different things to different people. To learn or teach Business English isn’t all that different from “general” English. It just refers to the communication skills used in the workplace. The lessons cover Business English vocabulary, Business terminology and possibly some Business idioms, which are relevant to their job, in the following situations: - Giving presentations
- Using the telephone
- Business correspondence – Business letters and Email
- Meetings and socializing
- Negotiating
- Making travel arrangements
Professional people such as lawyers, doctors, bankers, marketers and engineers, who need English for their work, have specialized language courses designed to suit their area of Business. An Engineer for instance, might only need to read manuals and product specifications in English. Marketers might need to read orders, contracts and read and write emails in less formal language. Executives may need to handle complex negotiations in English — which would need excellent spoken English and Business skills that might include an awareness of cultural differences - if they are dealing with International clients. The students of these groups would have been level checked by the school and/or teacher (hopefully!) and placed into the appropriate class. If the student decided to go for one-on-one lessons, they could have their course more specifically designed for their job requirements. Like in a regular ESL class, role playing, group work and real life experience will be emphasized. OK....that's the usual, boring, statistical stuff out of the way. English For Business
