TEFL Certification In Style.......
If you'd like to teach abroad for a few years, you'll need to get yourself some TEFL certification. There are so many courses and course locations to choose from. Thailand for example, is one of the cheapest destinations to complete your TESOL course in. And in the meantime, you get to enjoy beautiful beaches, relaxed lifestyle, scuba diving and more. This is good news for your pocket....and your mind. TEFL Certification providers are popping up all over the place - however, you'll want to make sure your time and money are well spent on the right TEFL certificate course. At present - in a lot of the more exotic locations - it doesn't take much to set yourself up in business providing TEFL certificate courses. This could lead to people completing a course only to find out that the course wasn't accredited, and their TEFL certification isn't recognized by employers. Here are some thing's to check before you sign up for a TESOL course: *The Course needs to be no less than a total of 120 hours in length* A typical course might be set up like this: - 4 hours observing experienced teachers
- 4 hours observing video of experienced teachers
- 16 hours of classroom observation
- 8 hours of individual teaching practice
These are the hours that really count. The rest of the time is spent in the classroom studying. You may be given tasks to complete for homework too. The course should run Monday to Friday, with weekends off....to hopefully chill out and enjoy the surroundings (depending on if you've been slacking during the week, or over indulging in the nightlife ;-) CELTA course The Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults - fomerly known as: The RSA Certificate, RSA CTEFLA, RSA/Cambridge CELTA, is your other option. The big boss of TESOL certification. Run by the prestigious Cambridge University, CELTA is recognised worldwide, and is the largest TEFL/TESOL training program in the world. It's accredited by the QCA and administered by the UCLES. Course Details - Minimum of 120 hours
- Minimum of 6 hours of teaching practice
- 6 hours of observation by experienced teachers
- Maximum of 18 people per class
- Low ratio of trainer/trainees - Min 1:6
Which Course Should I choose? There are arguments for and against choosing a CELTA or TESOL course. Some say CELTA courses are more harder going and expensive than TESOL courses. They're also focus on the teaching of adults - as the "A" of the CELTA acronym states. As fifty percent of your lessons will be spent teaching children, you'll have to then apply for a teaching English to young learners(TEYL)course to prepare you for this. A TESOL course on the other hand, is seen by many as an easy going alternative, and has a general nature....which tries to prepare you to teach both children and adults. Depending on which country you're taking in, you could get a slightly better deal than an equivalent CELTA course. Conclusion TEFL/TESOL certification is only as good as the provider. If the location shuts down or is questionable - it happens - your certificate could come under scrutiny. With CELTA, this isn't a problem. Some larger organizations - such as the British Council - seem to have a preference for the CELTA. It's also something to think about if you'd like to work in North America or Europe too. At the end of the day, the decision will depend on your own situation and feelings about these courses. At the time of writing - staying with Thailand as an example - you can get a CELTA course for $1600 or a 120 hour TESOL course for as low as $1390. If you're new to TEFL teaching, you might even consider an online TEFL course to get you started.
